Transworld Purchases Midwest Haunters Convention!

Here's an important message from the producers of MHC.

Almost ten years ago to the day the organizers of the Midwest Haunters Convention, Kelly and Neena Collins & Barry and Kathy Schieferstein, received an email announcing the end of the Ohio Haunter’s Conference. We made the decision at that time to continue to offer an event for the entire haunt community in the Midwest and MHC was born. Ten years later the show has grown beyond our wildest expectations to the point where it is no longer possible for us to grow and manage it in the way it deserves.

Today Transworld Exhibits has agreed to purchase the Midwest Haunters Convention and continue to present it as we originally intended, a place for the entire haunt community to come together and to Buy, Sell, Learn and Scare! The organizers would like to thank everyone who has supported us over the past ten wonderful years – our sponsors, exhibitors, presenters, and attendees. We look forward, with great anticipation, to seeing Transworld take our dream and make it even better!”

Help Midnight Syndicate Concert Become Reality!

Midnight Syndicate launches Kickstarter campaign in support of MIDNIGHT SYNDICATE LIVE! multimedia Halloween horror concert.

October 7, 2013 (Cleveland, OH) – After seventeen studio albums, including three horror movie scores and a motion picture of their own,  Gothic Halloween Horror music composers Midnight Syndicate have launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a multimedia concert experience.   Entitled MIDNIGHT SYNDICATE LIVE! the Halloween horror-themed show will feature  a unique blend of live Midnight Syndicate music, original films, music videos, and live theatre.

"We want it to be a feast for the eyes as much as the ears," said Gavin Goszka, "a unique show that is not only a Midnight Syndicate concert but also something that stands on its own as a great horror multimedia experience."  In order create the visual elements of the show, the band is teaming up with of veterans from the special FX, film, and haunted house industries.   The initial group includes special FX legend  Robert Kurtzman (Creature Corps, FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, KNB EFX), director Gary Jones (XENA, AXE GIANT), David "House" Greathouse (FACEOFF, Mushroomhead), Jason Carter (BABYLON 5, THE DEAD MATTER), Beki Ingram (FACEOFF), and Jason Blaszczak of Screamline Studios (Rob Zombie's AMERICAN NIGHTMARE).  "Because of the style of our music and our ties to the film, roleplaying game, and haunted house industries we're in the perfect position to put together a unique show that blends the best of these different worlds," said Edward Douglas.  "It's a project almost two decades in the making.   We want to bring your nightmares to life," added Gavin Goszka.

"We've always been our own label and distributor with little commercial radio airplay, so it's really been the fans' support over these past seventeen years that has allowed Midnight Syndicate to continue to grow.  They really are the best fans in the world," said Edward Douglas.   "This live concert is something that our fans have been asking us to do for many years.  The Kickstarter campaign is giving us the opportunity to involve them from the beginning and allowing us to take this exciting next step together."

He's been a staple at Haunted Hoochie for many years and currently has a severe blood infection which has caused his kidneys to shut down and his liver to not function properly. I've known Nate for close to 10 years and I don't want to lose a friend in the haunt industry. Below are ways you can help. Even if you can't donate money, just pray for Nate and his family. I know he can pull through this.

- Saturday 10:00 am to 10:00 pm
- Sunday Noon to 6:00 pm (we should be able to finish before 6)

We'll rent a U-Haul truck to move what we weren't able to fit in the semi trailers. We won't start emptying the semi trailers until next weekend.
Please let me know if you will be able to join us and when. I may rent a second U-Haul truck if we have enough workers.

We'll have 40,000 sq ft of space. I'll share tentative plans with you when we meet.
We’re getting a three year lease with a 3 year extension option. We would really like to have a place we can stay for many years until we can afford to buy or build a new building.
Please try to help us with the move. Bring a friend. The more the easier on everyone. Thank you so much for your consideration.

Hauntedhouse.com Purchases Haunted Attraction Magazine!

Haunted Attraction Magazine, the longest running haunted house magazine sells it’s assets to industry leader, Haunt Holdings LLC, the parent company of HauntedHouse.com.

Houston –HauntedHouse.com, the world’s largest online directory of haunted houses and Halloween activities, announced today that it has purchased the assets of Haunted Attraction Magazine. With haunted houses becoming over a 1 billion dollar industry, the merging of these industry giants create a synergy destined to reach haunted house professionals, hobbyists and the general public.

Industry veteran, Steve Kopelman, will be the Editor-in-Chief and co-publisher of the magazine while Christopher Brielmaier will be the art director and co-publisher. Together they intend to publish a quarterly magazine that will feature horror/haunted house celebrities while providing an insight to an industry that has maintained double digit annual growth the past decade. Their first issue will be published in September and will continue the Haunted Attraction Magazine tradition of featuring the must see 31 haunted attractions for the 2013 season.

“This acquisition allows us a bigger voice in the industry and will offer us the opportunity to even better showcase the haunted house experience to the general public.” Steve Kopelman, Co-Publisher.

Midnight Syndicate's Monsters of Legend

June 20, 2013 (Cleveland, OH) - On July 19, Midnight Syndicate will release it's sixteenth studio album, "Monsters of Legend." This "tribute to the golden age of horror" will feature sweeping symphonic horror instrumental music and sound effects in the signature style the band pioneered. "We want to make you feel like you are a character in one of those classic horror films - that you've entered a world where any one of the iconic characters from the Universal Horror and Hammer Films could be right around the corner," said composer Edward Douglas.

The CD artwork features original images from classic Universal Studios horror movies including Frankenstein, Werewolf of London, and Dracula. "Listeners will hear the influence of the Universal Monster, Hammer, and Euro Horror films from the 30s through the 70s, not only in the music but in the images the songs conjure," added Gavin Goszka. Although the band promises the new disc will deliver the dark atmosphere haunted attractions, roleplaying gamers, and Halloween enthusiasts expect from them, they feel they've crafted a disc that transcends their favorite time of the year.

"As we did on Carnival Arcane, we're always trying to take things up a notch both musically and with the sound design. There is a lot going on in this one. Plenty to pull you in, spark your imagination, and keep hold of you anytime you're looking to visit that mysterious place in your mind's eye."

The CD will be available for pre-order the first week in July. In addition to other new merchandise, Entity Productions Halloween Music will be releasing a special edition 12" vinyl version of the Monsters of Legend album, hand-numbered and limited to 250 copies.

Legendary Akron Haunt Owner Passes Away

City Blood is saddened by the loss of haunt legend, Don Johns. Don was the creator and owner of The Haunted Schoolhouse and Laboratory in Akron, OH. Since 1974 He's been scaring people all over the world with incredible set design, unique effects and great characters with the heart stopping Haunted Schoolhouse. In 1981 he purchased the Guggenheim Airship Institute next door and created The Haunted Laboratory. In 2009 We awarded The Haunted Schoolhouse "Haunt of the Year" and Don's one of a kind haunts never cease to amaze us. Don was only 63 years old when he passed away, but he's created a huge legacy during his time on earth and has been an inspiration for haunts around the globe.

While I didn't know Don personally, I respected his dedication to his craft and thank him for creating long lasting memories for my family and I. Who can forget the electrifying Tesla Coils, the death defying air tunnel and the countless homemade sets and props? The Haunted Schoolhouse and Laboratory are iconic haunts with unique elements that make them one of a kind. The Haunted Schoolhouse is also one of the oldest haunts in the nation and will be turning 40 this year. Time really flies when you're getting scared witless.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Don. The haunt industry will not be the same without him and may his legacy live on.

Haunt Design Kit.com Launches New Education Center!

Haunted House Design Revolution.
Haunt Design Kit.com Launches New Education Center

Lexington, Kentucky (May 17th 2013) - Haunted house design website, Haunt Design Kit.com, officially launches its brand-new Education Center today in response to it’s growing demand for educational resources and “how-to” information.

“The response to HDK (Haunt Design Kit.com) has been huge,” says website creator Tyler Barnett. “Since our launch back in February, the site has welcomed some 950 unique visitors and has had nearly 5,000 page views.”

Haunt Design Kit.com focuses on haunted house and attraction design using modern technology to make the process easier and more accessible to the smaller, family-owned attractions. Currently, the website hosts several free downloadable “kits” that are made to be used with Trimble’s SketchUp; a free 3D modeling software provided by Google.

“SketchUp is a wonderful program. Many architects use it today to design and pre-visualize their homes or projects,” Barnett says. “We’re just trying to bring this technology into the haunted house industry and make it as easy as possible for attraction owners and designers…but it does come with a learning curve; which is why we created the Education Center!”

The Education Center at Haunt Design Kit.com will be home to free articles, interviews, videos and resources…all in an effort to help sway the learning curve for its users. “This is a big step for us,” Barnett added. “But we’re trying to revolutionize the way people are designing their shows…and this is just our first leap forward.”

Dead End Hotel is a hotel themed haunt that's primarily indoors. It's based on a hotel built around the 40's and had to shut down in the late 60's to early 70's.There was a strange and unfortunate murder and Justine Brown was found hanging in one of the rooms upstairs. Guests reported sightings of ghosts, and complained of the sound of footsteps in their room.

Every room in the hotel has a hotel theme, from a hotel room, to a secret gambling room, a bar, the janitor's closet, etc. Once you complete going through the hotel there will be approximately 5 sites that will be outside. These scenes will be based off of a carnival that used to reside at the Dead End Hotel.

Big Announcements From MHC!

Back in the summer of 2004 a relatively unknown event emerged from the darkness. It was known as the Midwest Haunters Convention  (MHC). This rather small gathering of ghouls took place inside Cooper Stadium, Columbus’ Minor League Baseball stadium and former home of the Columbus Clippers and Terror Park Haunted Attraction. This small assembly of fear had only 30 vendors, 25 classes and 300 attendees.  Last year  (2012), MHC  had 75 vendors, 40 classes and 2500 attendees!

2004 was also the beginning of our signature events  Bloody Mary’s Monster Make Up Wars and Ms. Scary Midwest.  After 9 fabulous years of competition we are celebrating our 10th year !  This year’s   Monster Make Up Wars will be open to any teams of three (two artists and a model) including  all teams from past years. We will draw five lucky teams at random  to compete. Applications will be accepted online now until March 16th. www.midwesthauntersconvention.com/events/monstermakeupwars/
